Gears can date machine tools. This gear was manufactured or made using early
manufacturing methods.  teeth show being planed  not  cut or milled   or hobbed
also the key way is chipped and filed not cut  with a broch.   The gear was known to
be made during the 1890s.
How it was manufactured...
How the Gears are made can date a machine
tools.
Cold headed screws and bolts are used by ca. 1917  WWI.
Chipping with a cold chisels.
I have a Barns ca. 1880
lathe that shows this  on the
leg casting to make room
for a serial no. and to
smooth the top of the leg
castings to fit to the bed.
Various Manufacturing methods can help you date a machine by the
procewss that it was machined and how it was made.
The style of lathe beds. American and
English forms from the 1800s to the
1900s can be a clue to its style and
peroid of  manufacture.

Vertical Boring Mill
photographer Bob Eddy

A vertical boring mill or
vertical lathe is much
like an ordinary lathe
turned 90 degrees, with
the headstock down.
This “up and down”
position provides a great
advantage in working on
large, heavy work
pieces. With a heavy
work piece sitting on the
faceplate, setup of the
machine is much
easier. Also, with the
weight supported this
way, the spindle is less
likely to be thrown out of
alignment.
